Tropical Storm Ada Expected to Remain a Storm as It Moves Northwest

Manila: Tropical Storm Ada, internationally known as Nokaen, is maintaining its strength and is expected to remain at its current classification, according to the weather bureau's latest update. The 5 p.m. bulletin, released on Friday, indicated that Ada is forecast to weaken into a tropical depression by Tuesday and further downgrade into a remnant low by Wednesday. Currently, Ada has maximum sustained winds of 65 kilometers per hour (kph) near its center, with gusts reaching up to 80 kph. It was last observed 255 km east northeast of Borongan City, Eastern Samar or 335 km east of Catarman, Northern Samar, moving northwest at a speed of 20 kph.

According to Philippines News Agency, Wind Signal No. 1 remains in effect for several areas across Luzon, the Visayas, and Mindanao. In Luzon, this includes the southern portion of Quezon, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Catanduanes, Albay, Sorsogon, and Masbate. In the Visayas, the warning covers Northern Samar, Samar, Eastern Samar, Biliran, Leyte, Southern Leyte, and the northern portion of Cebu, including the Camotes and Bantayan Islands. In Mindanao, the Dinagat Islands and Siargao-Bucas Grande Islands are also under alert.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) has forecast heavy rainfall in the coming days across Catanduanes, Albay, Sorsogon, Northern Samar, Eastern Samar, Camarines Sur, Masbate, Samar, Biliran, Leyte, and Southern Leyte. As a precautionary measure, a gale warning is in effect for the eastern seaboards of Southern Luzon and the Visayas. Starting Sunday, Ada is expected to move slowly or become almost stationary over the sea northeast of Catanduanes. The storm is also predicted to pass close to Eastern Samar and Northern Samar on Saturday, and near Catanduanes from Saturday night through Sunday.
