Manila: Former senator Antonio Trillanes IV has initiated criminal complaints at the Department of Justice against 18 former Marines, lawyer Levi Baligod, former lawmaker Mike Defensor, broadcaster Jay Sonza, and other individuals.
According to Philippines News Agency, Trillanes refuted allegations that he accepted USD2 million from former congressman Zaldy Co, who is linked to 'ghost' flood control projects, for International Criminal Court (ICC) personnel. Trillanes, a complainant in the ICC case since 2017, emphasized his active role in communicating with the ICC, gathering evidence, and securing witnesses. He questioned the need for ICC prosecutors to receive a bribe, asserting that they do not work within a corrupt framework.
Trillanes accused Baligod and others of fabricating a bribery narrative to support their failed smear campaign. He described the timing of these allegations as strategic, coinciding with the EDSA People Power Anniversary and crucial ICC pre-trial proceedings. This, he suggested, was an attempt to undermine the integrity of the proceedings and intimidate ICC investigators and their witnesses.
In response to the false testimony, Trillanes has filed perjury charges against the 18 former Marines. Meanwhile, Ombudsman Jesus Remulla stated that they will assess the allegations made by Baligod's group, requesting individual statements from the former Marines rather than a joint affidavit. Remulla indicated awareness of potential orchestrators behind the allegations but emphasized the need for proof before making any claims.
