Bacolod: The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) has announced that the popular trekking site, Tinagong Dagat, located within the Northern Negros Natural Park (NNNP), is open to trekkers from January 22 to February 15. This window precedes a temporary closure set to begin on February 16.
According to Philippines News Agency, Protected Area Superintendent Ma. Gina Consolacion Gerangaya released an advisory stating that applications for mountaineering permits to Danao/Tinagong Dagat are currently being accepted. These can be submitted at the NNNP-Protected Area Management Office satellite site situated at the DENR compound in Barangay 39, Bacolod. Individuals and organized groups interested in exploring the area are encouraged to submit their applications promptly.
Gerangaya explained that the temporary closure, effective February 16, 2026, is necessary to conduct environmental impact monitoring and assessment. Additionally, it will allow for the review, enhancement, and rationalization of existing trekking policy guidelines. The area will remain closed until further notice.
Tinagong Dagat is a key trekking destination in Negros Occidental, nestled within Mount Mandalagan in Silay City. It is described by the NNNP management as a seasonal wetland formed from an ancient volcanic crater. During the wet season from June to December, it transforms into a lake as water fills the crater. Conversely, in the dry season from December to May, it dries up, revealing grassy plains ideal for trekking and camping.
The Northern Negros Natural Park is a protected area spanning 70,826.16 hectares. It covers 11 local government units in Negros Occidental, including the cities of Talisay, Silay, Victorias, Cadiz, Sagay, and San Carlos, as well as the municipalities of EB Magalona, Toboso, Calatrava, Salvador Benedicto, and Murcia.
