PBBM Admin Studying Scope, Coverage of Anti-Dynasty Bill

Manila: President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has ordered the review of the scope and coverage of the proposed anti-dynasty bill, Malaca±ang said Thursday. This developed after Marcos held a meeting at Malaca±an Palace in Manila on Tuesday to discuss the provisions of the anti-dynasty bill, which is among President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.'s legislative priorities.

According to Philippines News Agency, Palace Press Officer Claire Castro stated that the review aims to refine how the proposed measure could effectively limit political dynasties while remaining enforceable. The discussions focused on the levels of prohibition, degrees or familial relationships to be covered, and types of relationships considered, including consanguinity and affinity.

Castro added that the meeting also tackled which government positions may be covered by the prohibition, whether at the local, national, or both levels, and whether the prohibition would apply simultaneously or successively. She emphasized that the provisions are still under study and may be recommended once a concrete framework is finalized.

The anti-dynasty bill aims to prevent the concentration of political power within families, a long-standing concern in Philippine politics. Marcos has identified the measure as part of his priority legislative agenda. Castro mentioned that the administration is also considering how to balance enforceability with political realities, including local government dynamics.

No final recommendations have been submitted to Congress since the discussions are ongoing, Castro said. When asked if the President has specific recommendations for the bill, Castro noted that the meeting itself was intended to refine proposals and ensure they reflect the administration's legislative agenda.
