Manila: The Philippine National Police (PNP) is set to ensure the safety and security of three major Santo Ni±o festivals taking place this month across the country. This heightened security follows the peaceful observance of the Feast of Jesus Nazarene.
According to Philippines News Agency, the PNP announced on Tuesday that a force of 2,980 officers will be deployed to maintain order during the Ati-Atihan Festival in Kalibo, Aklan, scheduled from January 12 to 18. Additionally, at least 6,500 law enforcement and emergency personnel will be assigned to the Sinulog Festival in Cebu, which will take place on January 18.
Furthermore, a total of 3,078 officers will be stationed in Iloilo City for the Dinagyang Festival on January 25. These festivals, which honor the Holy Child Jesus, are known for their vibrant dances, music, and community parades. The Dinagyang Festival also commemorates the historic agreement between Malay settlers and the indigenous Ati people of Panay.
Acting PNP chief Lt. Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. emphasized the importance of these measures, stating, "Our role is to ensure everyone can celebrate with peace of mind." Security measures will include the suspension of firearm and explosives permits throughout the festival periods. During this time, only uniformed personnel from the police, military, and other authorized law enforcement agencies will be permitted to carry firearms.
Lt. Gen. Nartatez further stressed, "This is a preventive step. We ask for everyone's cooperation to avoid untoward incidents and keep the celebrations peaceful."
