Temporary Learning Spaces Established for Mayon-Affected Students in Albay

Tabaco city: The Department of Social Welfare and Development's (DSWD) Field Office 5 has initiated the establishment of a temporary learning space (TLS) at Hiraya Manawari Residences in Barangay San Vicente, Tabaco City, Albay. This initiative aims to provide educational continuity for approximately 149 students affected by the activity of Mayon Volcano.

According to Philippines News Agency, Assistant Secretary Irene Dumlao of the DSWD's Disaster Response Management Group stated that the TLS comprises nine classrooms, serving as a provisional school for learners from kindergarten to Grade 6. These students previously attended Magapo Elementary School, which is located within Mayon's 6-km Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ).

The establishment of the TLS was made possible through a collaborative effort involving national agencies, local government units, and partner institutions. This initiative aligns with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.'s directive to provide responsive and people-centered services to affected families, emphasizing the government's commitment to the welfare of children and youth in challenging situations.

In addition to the TLS, the DSWD and local government units have set up child-friendly spaces in evacuation centers and tent cities. These spaces offer psychosocial activities designed to help children cope with the disruptions caused by the volcano.

DSWD FO-5 Regional Director Norman Laurio emphasized the importance of ensuring that children's development continues despite the displacement from their regular lives. He highlighted the department's dedication to providing resources that offer both nourishment and emotional support.

To support the health and well-being of the students, the DSWD has deployed a mobile kitchen at the TLS, delivering hot and nutritious meals during school hours.
