Telcos Assure Uninterrupted Service Amid National Energy Emergency

Manila: Local telecommunications companies (telcos) assured the public of continued, uninterrupted mobile and broadband service nationwide amid the ongoing national energy emergency caused by the conflict in the Middle East. In a statement on Friday, Globe Telecom (Globe) assured its services will 'continue without disruption and as close to normal as possible' through the activation of its business continuity plan (BCP) to ensure a stable network amid concerns over fuel and energy supply.

According to Philippines News Agency, under its BCP, Globe will implement an expanded work-from-home scheme as well as other energy-saving measures and the prioritization of network fuel and energy needs. 'Globe is working closely with partners so that gensets across our cell sites will have ample fuel supply in case of commercial power interruptions. Battery runtime management is also in place to address scenarios where both grid power and generator support may be affected,' it said. The company is also strengthening its energy management by diversifying its power sources, with 30 percent of the company's network currently running on renewable energy. 'The company also continues to deploy energy-efficient technologies, including AI (artificial intelligence) solutions that help optimize energy consumption across its sites,' it said.

On the other hand, PLDT chief operating officer Menardo Jimenez assured users of its Home, Enterprise, Smart, and TNT services of their commitment to deliver 'continuous, secure and reliable telco and digital services.' 'Rest assured that we will continue to proactively safeguard our network infrastructure and service delivery capabilities, while upholding the well-being of our people,' Jimenez said. To date, PLDT has implemented its own comprehensive BCP that includes a resilient network with built-in redundancies, diversified supply chain, adequate fuel reservices, and trained personnel to ensure uninterrupted operations. 'Our strong relationships with multiple suppliers and logistics partners also ensure that critical materials, equipment, and services remain available under various conditions,' he said.

On Tuesday, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. declared a state of national emergency to address potential disruption in fuel supply. Marcos cited the ongoing conflict in the Middle East as a key factor affecting global oil production and transportation, which is affecting the country as a net importer of petroleum products.
