Speed Limit Eyed on Baguio Roads to Curb Mishaps

Baguio: The city government is considering the implementation of a speed limit on specific roads to deter accidents.

According to Philippines News Agency, Mayor Benjamin Magalong announced plans to convene a meeting with relevant offices to address the increasing number of road mishaps, which he described as alarming. He noted that a scientific study indicates the impact of speed limits on reducing vehicular accidents.

Maj. Marcy Grace Marron, the information officer for the Baguio City Police Office, reported that from January 1 to May 27 this year, there were 375 recorded vehicular traffic accidents in the city. These incidents resulted in eight fatalities and injuries to 60 individuals. Among the accidents, nine involved public utility vehicles, while 366 involved privately owned vehicles.

The majority of these cases, totaling 350, were attributed to human error, with the remainder due to mechanical defects and unfavorable road conditions. On Wednesday afternoon, three individuals sustained injuries when the truck they were riding in experienced a mechanical defect while descending Marcos Highway. Early Thursday morning, a closed forward truck allegedly suffered a mechanical defect while ascending Bokawkan Road, leading to a collision with a Tamaraw FX vehicle and three other parked vehicles. The occupants of the truck died at the scene, while the driver of the Tamaraw FX was hospitalized.

Both Marcos Highway and Bokawkan Road have been identified as accident-prone areas, particularly for speeding and overloaded vehicles. Mayor Magalong also mentioned discussions with the Land Transportation Office (LTO) and the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) about conducting extensive driver education.

The mayor stated plans to use the Convention Center for a series of seminars or orientations on safe driving, aiming to address the issue of human error and driver indiscretion contributing to most accidents.
