Siargao’s ‘Magpupungko’ Tourism Spot to Briefly Close for Rehab

Siargao: Siargao Island's popular tourist destination, the Magpupungko Beach, Tidal Pool, and Rock Formation in Pilar, Surigao del Norte, will be closed temporarily from Feb. 1 to 15. In an advisory released Thursday, the local government unit (LGU) of Pilar said the move aims to enable the area to redevelop naturally.

According to Philippines News Agency, the temporary closure complies with Municipal Ordinance No. 014, series of 2023, which designates a 'tourism holiday' in the town. 'The short-lived closure is intended to allow the area to recover and regenerate,' the LGU said.

During this period, the municipality's tourism workers will also receive skills training to improve their abilities, especially in environmental protection and safety measures. 'The training is also intended to ensure a safer, more sustainable, and improved tourism experience for visitors and stakeholders,' the LGU said.

The town government seeks public support to preserve Pilar's key eco-tourism site.
