Shakey’s Super League National Invitationals Kick Off in Davao

Davao city: Notre Dame of Dadiangas University (NDDU) is eager to show its best form in the Shakey’s Super League (SSL) National Invitationals, which unfold at the University of Southeastern Philippines Gym in Davao City on Friday. The Lady Kingfishers, who last competed in 2023, kick off their title campaign against defending champion National University in the 5 p.m. opener of the three-day Davao leg.

According to Philippines News Agency, Lady Kingfishers head coach Alvin Ambe expressed a positive outlook during the press conference at Shakey’s Gaisano Mall on Thursday. “Our mindset is that since NU is a very stellar team, we can give them a good fight and not intimidate the kids,” Ambe stated. He also acknowledged the pressure and excitement of performing in front of supporters, emphasizing that competing against strong teams like NU offers valuable learning experiences.

Despite the exit of three-time University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) MVP Bella Belen and Alyssa Solomon, who both turned pro, the reigning UAAP champion Lady Bulldogs remain formidable. NU’s roster includes decorated setter Lams Lamina, Vange Alinsug, libero Shaira Jardio, and Arah Panique, along with Shakey’s Girls V-League MVP Sam Cantada, Harlyn Serneche, and Denesse Daylisan.

The Davao Selection, comprising standouts from Ateneo de Davao University, Holy Cross of Davao College, and University of Mindanao, will battle the University of the Philippines (UP) in the main game at 7 p.m. UP head coach Fabio Menta remarked on the challenges and opportunities of playing against top regional teams, including NU, highlighting the potential seen in players across the country.

Veterans Ni±a Ytang, Irah Jaboneta, and Joan Monares will lead the Fighting Maroons, while Casiey Dongallo, Jelai Gajero, setter Kizzie Madriaga, and libero Shamel Fernandez are also expected to deliver. The tournament will follow a single round-robin format, with the team securing the best win-loss record, or match points if necessary, being declared the champion.

The SSL, in partnership with the City of Davao, Sports Development Division-City Mayor’s Office, Mindanao Development Authority, Apo View Hotel, Commission on Higher Education 11 (Davao), and the University of Southeastern Philippines, has adopted a tour-style format to showcase the talents of provincial squads in front of their home crowd. Athletic Events and Sports Management Inc. (ACES) president Dr. Ian Laurel emphasized the significance of the 50th anniversary of Shakey’s in promoting local volleyball. The tour aims to bring excitement to fans in Mindanao, Visayas, and Luzon, allowing provincial teams to play in front of their communities.

Cebu and Batangas will host the next two legs.
