Senators Clarify Senate Not Intimidating China, Urge Diplomatic Tone

Manila: Senators on Thursday clarified that the Senate is not attempting to intimidate China, saying recent resolutions and statements reflect the chamber's unified stand on sovereignty while urging both sides to pursue diplomatic dialogue to ease tensions.

According to Philippines News Agency, in a chance interview, Senator Joseph Victor 'JV' Ejercito rejected claims that lawmakers were provoking conflict, stressing that the Senate's actions are anchored on protecting national interest. Ejercito emphasized the importance of exhausting all diplomatic means and clarified that the Senate does not want war. He insisted that senators should not be accused of being pro-war for standing against China, as their actions are focused on defending national sovereignty.

Ejercito acknowledged China's status as a global power but maintained that the Philippines must assert its rights. He reiterated the need for dialogue and diplomatic solutions, noting that while China is a superpower, the Philippines must stand up for its sovereignty, which is worth fighting for. He also denied that the Senate was pressuring or threatening Chinese officials, stating that the Senate is merely expressing its unified stance.

Meanwhile, Senator Raffy Tulfo echoed the clarification during a separate press briefing, saying he has not heard any senator issue threats against the Chinese Embassy. Tulfo dismissed any claims of threats as imagination and clarified that the recently adopted Senate Resolution 256 is not a threat to the Chinese Embassy. He called for direct diplomatic engagement to reduce friction and suggested involving the Department of Foreign Affairs in discussions to ease tensions.

Tulfo noted the high tensions amid developments in the West Philippine Sea and emphasized the need for clearer protocols to prevent misunderstandings between officials of both countries. The Senate recently adopted Resolution 256, condemning remarks from the Chinese Embassy against Philippine officials and reaffirming the country's position on protecting its sovereignty.
