Manila: The Senate will reopen its inquiry on child safety in digital spaces on July 1 following the fatal school shooting in Tacloban City, with online radicalization among children now under sharper scrutiny. Senator Risa Hontiveros announced Tuesday that the Senate Committee on Women, Children, Family Relations and Gender Equality will examine whether online platforms and gaming spaces are doing enough to prevent the spread of violent content and the grooming of minors.
According to Philippines News Agency, the hearing comes after the committee's prior investigation on April 14, where lawmakers discussed allegations that online platforms and gaming spaces have been used to groom, manipulate, and radicalize children into violence. The committee also addressed issues related to online sexual abuse, exploitation, grooming, and extortion of minors during the previous session.
Senator Hontiveros emphasized the importance of accountability, stating that if the internet is being used to victimize children, those responsible must face consequences. She highlighted the need for Big Tech companies to prioritize safety over profit, especially in light of the tragedies affecting families and schools.
The upcoming inquiry aims to assess whether sufficient safeguards are in place to protect children online. Senator Hontiveros stressed the urgency of taking action to prevent another tragedy from occurring.
