Davao city: The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) temporarily suspended all vessels and watercraft departing from southeastern Mindanao and headed toward the Visayas and Luzon on Thursday due to Tropical Storm Basyang (international name Penha). The decision came as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of all sea travelers amidst the approaching storm.
According to Philippines News Agency, the suspension followed the 5 p.m. Wednesday bulletin from the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), which placed northeastern Mindanao under Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal (TCWS) No. 1. This indicates the potential impact of the tropical storm on the region, necessitating stringent safety measures.
The advisory, which remains in effect until further notice, emphasized that changes might occur based on the latest weather updates from PAGASA. Mariners, vessel operators, and passengers were reminded to adhere to PCG Memorandum Circular 02-23, detailing the Revised Guidelines on the Movement of Vessels During Heavy Weather.
The PCG urged the public to maintain vigilance, stay informed through official channels, and prioritize safety. Additionally, the PCG District Southeastern Mindanao issued specific safety reminders to fishermen. They were advised to equip themselves with safety gear such as life jackets, flashlights, batteries, and whistles, and to refrain from sailing during storms.
