Manila: The Department of Science and Technology in Caraga (DOST-13) has officially commenced the three-day Regional Science, Technology, and Innovation Week (RSTW), an event dedicated to highlighting the innovations propelling development within the region.
According to Philippines News Agency, the event underscores the importance of science and technology in fostering collaboration and enhancing research, while offering residents insights into innovations that are ready for practical application. DOST-13 Regional Director Noel Ajoc emphasized the positive impact that science and technology advancements have had on various sectors, particularly benefiting farmers and micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs).
Ajoc pointed out that numerous MSMEs, especially those involved in food processing, have already adopted these innovations. He noted that most of these food technologies were developed by state colleges and universities within the region. "These innovations and developed technologies are now on display during this three-day RSTW in Butuan City," Ajoc added.
The opening was also attended by DOST Undersecretary Maria Theresa De Guzman, who introduced Project SARAI, or Smarter Approaches to Reinvigorate Agriculture as an Industry. De Guzman highlighted the challenges faced by farmers and fisherfolk due to climate change and explained how Project SARAI provides an online platform offering data on climate, weather, and agricultural inputs, including costs and sources of materials.
De Guzman further explained that Project SARAI guides farmers on optimal planting locations, timing, and pest identification, ensuring that all data is accessible to aid farmers in making timely decisions. Ajoc mentioned that model areas for Project SARAI have already been established across municipalities in the region's five provinces, in collaboration with the Department of Agriculture.
He also acknowledged the involvement of local government units in the RSTW's commencement, highlighting their support for science and technology initiatives. The RSTW serves as an annual gathering for researchers, innovators, and stakeholders to showcase science and technology breakthroughs and promote technology commercialization throughout the country.
