Sanchez Mira Fishers Conduct Emergency Bangus Harvest Due to Weather Changes

Sanchez mira: Aqua farmers in Sanchez Mira, Cagayan, on Tuesday conducted a partial emergency harvest of bangus (milkfish) in cages due to sudden weather changes. Municipal agriculturist Ridel Cabulisan reported that about 30 fisherfolk in Sitio Minanga, Barangay Namuac, are affected by an emergency harvest due to oxygen deficiency in the Pata River. Some 31,000 kilos of bangus need to be harvested quickly to prevent fish kills.

According to Philippines News Agency, Sanchez Mira Mayor Abraham Bagasin quickly coordinated with the League of Mayors of the Philippines-Cagayan Chapter and the Cagayan provincial government to help dispose of their fresh harvest and minimize losses. Governor Edgar Aglipay has committed to purchasing PHP1 million worth of bangus.

Some of the harvest were distributed the same day to tricycle drivers, senior citizens, persons with disabilities, and solo parents in Cagayan. Bagasin also called on his constituents to buy their bangus from the local market. 'It's a big deal if you can buy at least one kilo from them,' he said in Filipino, citing the current price of PHP170 to PHP180 per kilo. The price could be even lower if buying wholesale, he added.
