San Lazaro Hospital Records 157 Leptospirosis Cases and 13 Deaths Amid Flooding

San lazaro hospital: San Lazaro Hospital (SLH) has reported 157 cases of leptospirosis, with 13 fatalities, following recent flooding incidents. The cases are anticipated to reach their peak by August 31, according to a statement made by a hospital official on Friday.

According to Philippines News Agency, SLH Medical Chief David Suplico revealed during an interview with Bagong Pilipinas Ngayon that they are experiencing a surge in leptospirosis cases. Patients typically develop symptoms within the two- to 30-day incubation period of the disease, with most showing symptoms within two weeks of exposure to contaminated floodwater.

Suplico stated, "Presently, we already have 157 patients admitted sa hospital for leptospirosis," emphasizing that the two-week period from August 17 would conclude on August 31. The 13 fatalities recorded were aged between 22 to 59 years, consisting of 10 men and three women.

To manage the increased number of patients, SLH has expanded its manpower and bed capacity with assistance from the Department of Health, Jose Fabella Memorial Hospital, Dr. Jose N. Rodriguez Memorial Hospital, and the Philippine Red Cross. Additional cot beds were supplied by the Philippine Blood Center.

SLH has also established a dedicated leptospirosis fast lane at a triage tent to expedite the assessment and treatment of individuals with a history of floodwater exposure. Suplico emphasized the importance of assessing and testing patients within two hours of their arrival at the fast lane.

He urged anyone who develops flu-like symptoms after wading through floodwater, such as fever, joint or muscle pain, headache, and red eyes, to immediately seek medical attention. If left untreated, leptospirosis can progress to severe infections affecting the liver, kidneys, and respiratory system.

The Department of Health has also advised those who were compelled to wade through floodwater to seek early medical consultation and inquire about post-exposure prophylaxis to minimize the risk of severe illness.
