Manila: If appointed Ombudsman, Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla stated he would permit access to government officials’ statements of assets and liabilities (SALN), provided there are safeguards against misuse.

According to Philippines News Agency, during a press briefing following his interview with the Judicial and Bar Council (JBC), Remulla emphasized that SALNs should not be ‘weaponized’ against public officials. He expressed concerns about the potential misuse of SALNs for harassment or blackmail, highlighting the risks of exposing sensitive information.

Remulla noted that while SALNs can be accessed for investigative purposes by government agencies, it is crucial to implement appropriate safeguards to protect individuals. He also mentioned being guided by public sentiment regarding the expansion of lifestyle checks on government workers, suggesting that the community’s input is vital.

Additionally, Remulla plans to request the Ombudsman to resolve a complaint filed against him by Senator Imee Marcos concerning the arrest and transfer of former president Rodrigo Duterte to The Hague. He emphasized the importance of maintaining stability and preventing violence during such proceedings.

The JBC concluded its interviews for the Ombudsman position, which included candidates such as Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office chair Felix Reyes, Regional Trial Court Judge Jayson Rodenas, and retired RTC Judge Benjamin Turgano. The Office of the Ombudsman is tasked with addressing complaints against public officials and ensuring accountability in government service.
