PNP Targets Conviction in PHP1.1 Billion Cigarette Smuggling Case

Batangas city: The Philippine National Police-Highway Patrol Group (PNP-HPG) is currently gathering evidence to ensure the prosecution of individuals implicated in the attempted smuggling of PHP1.1 billion worth of cigarettes, which were confiscated in Batangas City at the end of December.

According to Philippines News Agency, PNP-HPG spokesperson Lt. Nadame Malang emphasized that the objective is to "ensure the filing of strong criminal charges that would lead to the conviction of all those involved," aligning with the government's heightened efforts against smuggling. Investigators have sought additional documentation from various agencies to bolster the case, as confirmed by Lt. Malang, who stated, "We are still waiting for other documents from other agencies."

The individuals likely to face charges include a female Bureau of Customs (BOC) employee stationed at the Batangas Port and her husband, who owns the trucking company allegedly used in the smuggling operation. PNP-HPG Director Brig. Gen. Hansel Marantan corroborated the BOC personnel's supposed involvement, noting that her husband's trucking firm may have played a role in the illicit activity.

The illegal shipment came to light when PNP-HPG operatives, in pursuit of a stolen vehicle, discovered the container vans within a compound in Balete, Batangas City on December 31, 2025. Brig. Gen. Marantan indicated that charges, including potential breaches of Republic Act 12022 or the Anti-Agricultural Sabotage Act, are being readied against the suspects.
