PNP Seeks Prompt Disposal of Seized Illegal Cigarettes

Manila: The Philippine National Police (PNP) is coordinating with the Bureau of Customs (BOC) and other agencies for the prompt disposal of seized smuggled and illegally manufactured cigarettes. PNP chief Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said the move aims to safeguard the integrity of anti-smuggling operations.

According to Philippines News Agency, Nartatez emphasized the importance of disposing of these confiscated cigarettes properly and urgently to prevent speculation and to maintain the integrity of aggressive police operations against illegal products. He instructed operating units to immediately turn over seized cigarettes to the BOC, the Bureau of Internal Revenue, or other appropriate agencies, ensuring strict documentation and monitoring of confiscated items.

Amid the nationwide crackdown, Nartatez called on the public to serve as the police's "eyes and ears," assuring informants of protection. He encouraged the public to report suspected sellers or manufacturers of illegal cigarettes using the Unified 911 hotline, promising confidentiality for those who provide information.

Nartatez also advised the public to be specific when reporting, suggesting they provide the exact location and, if possible, the brand of the illegal cigarettes being sold.
