PNP Secures P1.67 Billion Worth of Firearms and Equipment

Manila: The modernization of the Philippine National Police (PNP) received a significant boost with the acquisition of PHP1.672 billion worth of firearms and equipment. This procurement includes vital mobility and protection tools aimed at enhancing the capabilities of the police force.

According to Philippines News Agency, the items procured consist of 322 unmanned aerial vehicles or drones, 383 4×4 personnel carriers, 32 heavy motorcycles, 225 light transport vehicles, and 400 light motorcycles. Additionally, the PNP acquired 3,000 5.56mm basic assault rifles, 155 units of 5.56mm light machine guns, 4,989 enhanced combat helmets, and 505 multi-mode mobile devices.

The newly acquired firearms and equipment will be distributed to police units nationwide, as stated by acting PNP chief Lt. Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. during the blessing ceremony at Camp Crame. The ceremony marked a key step in the distribution process.

Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Juanito Victor “Jonvic” Remulla highlighted that the procurement will enhance both the mobility and firepower of police officers. Remulla pointed out the issue of limited mobility, particularly in Metro Manila, where there are over 40,000 police officers but only 500 police vehicles.

Remulla further mentioned the need for an additional 2,000 vehicles over the next two years. He revealed that the PNP is expected to receive 500 additional vehicles by January and another 600 by July of the following year. This phased acquisition aims to gradually strengthen police operations.

To improve communication capabilities, Remulla announced plans to purchase around 2,000 push-to-talk over cellular communication systems by the end of the year. These devices will integrate a body camera, cellphone, and radio into a single unit, providing enhanced communication tools for officers on duty.
