Manila: The Philippine National Police (PNP) has initiated security measures in anticipation of potential protests and rallies marking former president Rodrigo Duterte's 81st birthday on March 28.
According to Philippines News Agency, PNP chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. has instructed police office chiefs and unit heads to organize the deployment of officers in areas where demonstrations are anticipated. Nartatez emphasized that the preparations are aimed at ensuring the safety and orderliness of public assemblies while allowing citizens to express themselves peacefully.
The PNP plans to collaborate with local government units and relevant agencies to support these efforts. Nartatez highlighted the importance of engaging with rally organizers, underscoring the ongoing practice of dialogue between law enforcement and civil society groups during significant demonstrations to promote cooperation and avoid misunderstandings.
Supporters of Duterte, who is currently detained at the International Criminal Court detention center in The Hague on charges of crimes against humanity, have indicated their intention to hold gatherings on his birthday. The PNP respects the public's right to protest, Nartatez affirmed, adding that the police force is on high alert to ensure that any protests are conducted safely and peacefully.
Nartatez assured that the PNP will maintain maximum tolerance, intervening only if legal violations occur, to prevent conflicts between law enforcement and protesters.
