Pasay city: The Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR) announced its commitment to invest an initial PHP1.37 billion in the construction of 25 public school buildings across the nation. This development was formalized through a memorandum of agreement signed between PAGCOR, the Department of Education (DepEd), and representatives from the first batch of 25 beneficiary local government units, during a ceremony held at the PAGCOR office in Pasay City.
According to Philippines News Agency, the funding is part of a broader two-year initiative aimed at constructing 125 school buildings, equivalent to approximately 1,500 classrooms, to tackle the country's classroom deficit in collaboration with DepEd. PAGCOR Chairperson and CEO Alejandro Tengco revealed that over PHP8 billion has been allocated for the project, with a commitment to complete all classrooms by 2027.
To ensure transparency and proper execution, the funds will be distributed to local government units (LGUs) in three phases, contingent upon construction progress and adherence to project standards. The initial beneficiaries include LGUs from regions such as La Union, Pangasinan, Pampanga, and several others across the country. Each LGU will receive around PHP55 million to build a three-story school building featuring 12 classrooms equipped with essential facilities and a one-year free internet subscription.
Tengco emphasized the program's goal to enhance learning conditions, particularly in areas plagued by overcrowded classrooms and inadequate learning environments. He noted the country's significant shortage of 165,000 classrooms, presenting a formidable challenge for any administration. In addition, PAGCOR plans to implement a new initiative requiring online gaming licensees to contribute a part of their revenue to socio-civic programs, including the renovation of public school buildings.
Education Secretary Sonny Angara expressed appreciation for PAGCOR's efforts, highlighting the positive impact on the education sector. Angara remarked that these new classrooms represent more than just physical structures; they are vital spaces where the aspirations of young Filipinos can be nurtured and realized.
