PNP Investigates Political Motives in Ambush on Shariff Aguak Mayor

Manila: The Philippine National Police (PNP) is probing local politics as a possible motive behind the ambush on Shariff Aguak, Maguindanao del Sur Mayor Akmad Mitra Ampatuan, which marked the fourth attempt on his life.

According to Philippines News Agency, PNP information chief and spokesperson Brig. Gen. Randulf Tua±o discussed in a television interview that the primary angle being considered is local tension related to politics, which may have led to the hiring of gunmen-for-hire. Tua±o further mentioned that investigators are exploring a possible retaliation motive, though it remains unconfirmed.

The recent attack occurred on Sunday, with Ampatuan surviving the incident. However, two of his security personnel sustained injuries. During subsequent pursuit operations, three suspects were killed, while one suspect remains at large.

Brig. Gen. Tua±o also highlighted that previous attempts on Mayor Ampatuan's life took place in 2010, 2014, and 2019. The 2010 incident involved a roadside explosion, followed by ambushes in the subsequent years.

The PNP is actively coordinating with the Armed Forces of the Philippines to enhance security measures in the area.
