PNP Enhances Security Measures for Upcoming Anti-Corruption Protest

Manila: The Philippine National Police (PNP) announced on Tuesday that necessary adjustments will be implemented in security protocols for the planned anti-corruption protest on November 30, aiming to prevent a recurrence of the violent events that took place in Manila in September.

According to Philippines News Agency, acting PNP chief Lt. Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. stated that critical lessons learned from the September 21 violence, triggered by young protesters using debris and incendiary devices against police lines, have been taken into account. The PNP is committed to maintaining peace and order during public demonstrations, ensuring readiness to respond to any eventualities.

Nartatez confirmed an increase in police deployment, with officers instructed to exercise maximum tolerance while maintaining zero tolerance for violent acts, such as setting fires or throwing projectiles. Coordination with participating groups is emphasized to facilitate the peaceful expression of grievances without endangering public order or safety.

The PNP’s focus will be on three main priorities: close monitoring of protest groups, reinforcement of security barriers and surveillance systems in collaboration with local government units, and additional deployment of security forces. Continuous monitoring of groups likely to incite violence is underway, with cases being filed against them.

The September 21 protest was initially peaceful but turned violent near Ayala Bridge and Mendiola in Manila when some protesters attempted to storm Malaca±ang. The incidents resulted in injuries to nearly 100 police officers and several protesters. The Criminal Investigation and Detection Group reported that 97 individuals have been charged with offenses related to the incident, including inciting to sedition and conspiracy to commit sedition. Further investigations are ongoing, with more charges expected to be filed in the coming days.
