New york: The Philippine government is set to advocate for a strengthened United Nations during its participation in the UN General Assembly (UNGA) High-Level Week in New York from September 21 to 27, as announced by the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) on Tuesday. Foreign Affairs Secretary Ma. Theresa Lazaro will head the Philippine delegation and is expected to reaffirm Manila’s commitment to multilateralism and a rules-based international order.

According to Philippines News Agency, Lazaro will emphasize the Philippines’ efforts in tackling complex global challenges and call for a more robust UN that supports peace, security, climate action, migrant protection, and sustainable development. She will also spearhead the Philippines’ campaign for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council for the term 2027-2028.

High-level discussions will see Lazaro and other government officials engage in critical issues such as artificial intelligence, climate financing, migration, biodiversity, and maritime security. Furthermore, Lazaro will meet with her international counterparts to discuss and strengthen the country’s bilateral and multilateral relationships.

Lazaro is attending on behalf of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., who has chosen to prioritize domestic issues and will not be present at the high-level event. Recently, President Marcos announced the complete formation of the Independent Commission for Infrastructure, tasked with investigating irregularities in flood control and other infrastructure projects.
