Manila: The Philippines and Germany reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening relations Tuesday as they celebrated over seven decades of diplomatic ties during a state luncheon hosted by President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. for German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier.
According to Philippines News Agency, in his toast remarks delivered at Malaca±an Palace in Manila, Marcos underscored the importance of continued friendship, enhanced cooperation and shared prosperity between the two nations, recognizing Germany as a key partner of the Philippines in national development. He welcomed the official German delegation with the country's trademark hospitality and raised a toast to the continued good health and success of Steinmeier and his spouse, as well as to Filipinos and Germans working together in pursuit of peace.
For over seven decades of bilateral relations, Germany has become a very important partner of the Philippines in various aspects of cooperation that impact national development. Marcos expressed pleasure and honor in extending the famous Filipino hospitality as they celebrated their rich and vibrant culture through the luncheon.
Steinmeier expressed gratitude for the warm reception and highlighted longstanding historical and cultural links between the two countries, citing the significance of Wilhelmsfeld in Germany where Philippine national hero Dr. Jose Rizal once stayed and completed "Noli Me T¡ngere." He emphasized shared democratic values, including respect for the rule of law and human rights, stating that defending these values remains a common task and the foundation of their partnership.
The German President also noted the growing cooperation in trade and investment, with hundreds of German firms operating in the Philippines and thousands of Filipinos living and working in Germany in various professions. He acknowledged the increasing number of German tourists discovering the Philippines, admiring the country's over 7,600 islands, 170 languages, and unique biodiversity.
Steinmeier expressed solidarity with the Philippines in the aftermath of natural disasters and reaffirmed support for joint efforts to address climate change, citing the country's vulnerability to typhoons and rising sea levels. He conveyed condolences for the recent severe earthquake in the south of the Philippines, expressing deep sorrow for those who lost relatives or their livelihoods. Both nations prioritize the fight against climate change, recognizing its impact on the Philippines as an island state.
