PH Military Urged to Invest in Advanced Technology

Manila: Department of National Defense (DND) Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. has emphasized the necessity for the Philippines to enhance investment in advanced military technology to boost the nation's defense capabilities.

According to Philippines News Agency, Teodoro remarked on Friday about the significance of the recently concluded three-week "Balikatan" military exercises, which utilized state-of-the-art technology and concluded without major mishaps. He highlighted the importance of precision in military operations, stating, "I believe that this demonstration, complex as it is, really will underscore to the host country's audience, the Filipinos, the need to preserve our military spaces and to invest in higher technology because with precision comes safety."

Teodoro further elaborated on the need for investments in various aspects such as skill sets, infrastructure, and capabilities. The military exercises showcased advanced missile and rocket systems from the United States and Japan, notable for their long-range capabilities and effectiveness in detecting and tracking distant targets.

He expressed optimism for future exercises, indicating plans to enhance the scope with more scenarios, technology, learning transfers, deterrence, and interoperability. Teodoro also mentioned that a review of the exercises' outcomes is planned to ensure alignment with necessary improvements.

The 2026 "Balikatan" exercises, held from April 20 to May 8, saw participation from approximately 17,000 troops representing the militaries of the Philippines, US, Australia, Japan, Canada, France, and New Zealand.
