PH Army Maintains Troop Levels in Basilan Despite ASG-Free Declaration

Manila: The Philippine Army (PA) will not alter the deployment of its personnel in Basilan, despite the province being officially declared free of the terrorist Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG), announced PA Chief Lt. Gen. Roy Galido during a media briefing at Fort Bonifacio, Taguig City.

According to Philippines News Agency, Galido emphasized the necessity of maintaining troop levels to ensure the continued peace and facilitate development in the area. The PA’s sustained presence aims to support confidence-building efforts and reinforce the security that has been established. Currently, about six Philippine Army battalions are stationed in Basilan, reflecting the importance of their role in maintaining the peace.

Galido also noted that the presence of the ASG on the island has significantly diminished, describing it as “minimal.” He highlighted the importance of public awareness in recognizing Basilan as a peaceful region.

This announcement follows the official declaration made on Monday by Presidential Peace Adviser Secretary Carlito Galvez Jr. and Special Assistant to the President Antonio Lagdameo Jr., marking Basilan as ASG-free. This milestone is the result of extensive military efforts, collaboration among multiple stakeholders, and ongoing peacebuilding activities over the years. The declaration is supported by a joint resolution from the Provincial Peace and Order Council and the Provincial Anti-Drug Abuse Council, issued on February 6, 2025.
