PH and Nicaragua Sign Historic Bilateral Agreement for Political Consultations

Mexico city: The Philippines and Nicaragua have formalized their diplomatic relationship with the signing of a bilateral agreement aimed at establishing political consultations. This marks a significant development in the collaboration between the two nations, which have shared diplomatic ties for the past fifty years.

According to Philippines News Agency, Philippine Ambassador to Nicaragua Arvin de Leon and Nicaraguan Ambassador Juan Carlos Guti©rrez Madrigal signed the memorandum of understanding in Mexico City. This agreement, which was finalized on the Philippine Independence Day, June 12, represents the first official pact between the two countries since they initiated formal diplomatic relations on August 10, 1973.

The agreement is poised to lay the groundwork for a structured dialogue between the Philippines and Nicaragua, focusing on areas of mutual interest and potential cooperation. The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) emphasized that both nations are committed to swiftly implementing the agreement to foster a more constructive and results-driven partnership.

The Marcos administration has been proactive in engaging with non-traditional partners to bolster bilateral ties and trade. In 2023, the DFA organized meetings with Nicaragua's high-ranking officials, including Foreign Minister Denis Moncada Colindres, to discuss the newly established mechanisms for cooperation.
