PCG to Deploy 17K Personnel to Secure Semana Santa 2026

Manila: The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) is set to deploy about 17,000 personnel across the country as part of the government's 'Oplan Biyaheng Ayos: Semana Santa 2026' that seeks to ensure the safety and security of domestic passengers from March 28 until April 5.

According to Philippines News Agency, PCG press officer Joy Gumatay said the deployment is the same number as last year's and will focus on maritime safety and security. 'Naka-focus sa ports, waterways, and nautical highways ang mga PCG personnel. Sa kalsada at lupa naman naka-focus ang mga pulis (PCG personnel will focus on ports, waterways, and nautical highways, while the police will focus on roads and land),' Gumatay said.

In a separate statement, PCG Commandant Admiral Ronnie Gil Gavan ordered all PCG districts, stations, and sub-stations to be on heightened alert during the period and to intensify monitoring of passenger ships, ports, and nautical highways. 'As millions of Filipinos travel this Holy Week, the PCG stands ready to keep our seas safe. We urge the public to follow safety guidelines and coordinate with authorities so everyone can reach their destinations and return home safely,' Gavan said.

As part of Oplan Biyaheng Ayos, the Department of Transportation (DOTr) Maritime Sector will also enforce stricter vessel inspections, including rigorous pre-departure inspections to prevent overloading, and the enforcement of other maritime safety regulations. 'Coast Guard personnel will assist the DOTr in ensuring secure and orderly sea travel throughout the Lenten season,' he said.

In particular, PCG personnel will conduct 24/7 monitoring of ships and water passages, particularly along major inter-island routes on the western and eastern seaboards. 'PCG K9 units and security teams will also carry out port inspections and passenger screening to deter illegal activities and maritime crimes,' Gavan said.

Other personnel will also be on standby to respond to emergencies, such as search and rescue units, medical teams, and deployable response groups. 'The PCG will also coordinate with local government units and lifeguards to strengthen maritime safety monitoring in beach areas and other maritime recreation sites,' he said.

There will also be regular coastal and sea patrols to maintain visibility and ensure immediate response to maritime incidents. 'The PCG will implement these measures in coordination with the Armed Forces of the Philippines, Philippine National Police, Philippine Ports Authority, Maritime Industry Authority, and local government units,' Gavan said.

He also reminded maritime passengers against bringing prohibited items aboard ships, such as flammable liquids, hazardous chemicals, fireworks, and other dangerous materials, to prevent getting inconvenienced during their travel.
