PBBM Pledges to Strengthen Mining Sector and Combat Illegal Operations

Manila: President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has vowed to enhance the mining sector while intensifying efforts against illegal mining operations. During the opening of the Mining Philippines 2025: International Conference and Exhibition at The Grand Hyatt Manila in Taguig City, he emphasized the government’s commitment to transparency and accountability in the mining industry.

According to Philippines News Agency, Marcos outlined his administration’s goal to develop a responsible and climate-resilient mining sector. He stressed that all mining activities must align with environmental commitments, including the Paris Agreement and the Philippine Energy Plan, to avoid jeopardizing the planet.

Marcos declared that irresponsible mining practices have no place in the country and laws will be strictly enforced against operations that harm the environment and communities. He highlighted the importance of adhering to laws like the Enhanced Fiscal Regime for Large-Scale Metallic Mining Act and the Philippine Ecosystem and Natural Capital Accounting System Act to ensure sustainable development.

He urged mining operators to align their Social Development and Management Programs with global and national development frameworks to support the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. He called for mining operations to be science-based and sustainable, with a focus on attracting investors who respect local laws, people, and the environment.

Marcos praised the Chamber of Mines of the Philippines (COMP) for its role in fostering an active and accountable mining sector and its adoption of the Towards Sustainable Mining Program. He acknowledged the Philippines as the first Asian country to implement the program, joining nations like Canada and Australia in promoting ethical mining practices.

He also noted the importance of the COMP’s involvement in the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative to effectively manage mining revenues.

Marcos emphasized the significance of the conference in paving a path where economic strength and social responsibility coexist. He discussed the critical role minerals play in advancing technologies for clean energy and how the mining industry could support regional industrialization and job creation.

With the theme “From Policy to Progress: Driving Mining Through Innovation and Investment,” the two-day event aims to bring together stakeholders to exchange insights, propose solutions, and collaborate on the future of mining in the Philippines.
