Palarong Bicol Medical Teams Implement Heat Management Measures Amid Rising Temperatures

Legazpi city: The Department of Education in Bicol (DepEd-5) medical teams have implemented contingency measures to safeguard student-athletes, coaches, and officials against heat-related illnesses amid rising temperatures during the ongoing Palarong Bicol 2026, officials said Thursday. Dr. Sarah Gillego, who oversees the Legazpi medical team for Palarong Bicol, stated that they have activated their heat management plan, especially for outdoor sports such as athletics, football, softball, and other events held in open areas.

According to Philippines News Agency, the medical teams are collaborating with nearby public hospitals to address athletes' medical needs during their stay at the Palaro, which runs from March 1 to 7. Dr. Gillego mentioned that Legazpi City Hospital and Bicol Regional Hospital and Medical Center are prepared for referrals and implementing zero-balance billing for the athletes' medical needs. The Legazpi City Health Office has also deployed ambulances to respond promptly to the needs of the players.

Dr. Gillego noted that the rising heat index observed in the city is typical for this time of year and advised athletes to stay hydrated. Medical kits include oral rehydration salts (Oresol), and drinking water is readily available. Additionally, all medical personnel are properly equipped before accompanying the delegates, with division medical officers also on site.

Meanwhile, Jason Razal, a member of the monitoring team from the DepEd Central Office, mentioned that Region 5 is observing the window hour in their Palaro for the student-athletes. The window hour indicates the specific time when outdoor games are prohibited, meaning no games occur at 10 a.m., and activities will restart at 3 p.m.

DepEd-5 assured that with preventive measures and strict monitoring in place, the safety and well-being of all Palarong Bicol participants remain a top priority. According to the state weather bureau, the heat index in Legazpi City reached 37 degrees Celsius on Thursday.
