Manila: Malaca±ang declared on Monday that the impeachment complaint against President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. is "baseless," asserting that the President has consistently acted within the framework of the law and the constitution. Palace Press Officer Claire Castro stated that the Palace has not yet received a copy of the complaint, limiting its ability to provide detailed comments.
According to Philippines News Agency, Castro pointed out that the issues raised in the complaint are not new. "Pero itong mga issue na ito ay matagal na natin nasagot at matagal na natin na-ipaliwanag (But these issues have long been answered and explained)," Castro stated, emphasizing the lack of foundation for the complaint. "Sa ngayon . masasabi natin ito ay walang basehan (For now, we can say that this is without basis)."
The Palace official underscored that President Marcos's actions are always legally compliant. "Ang lahat ng naging trabaho ng Pangulo ay naaayon sa batas at sa konstitusyon. Kaya masasabi natin walang basehan sa ngayon (All of the President's actions were in accordance with the law and the constitution. Thus, we can say that there is no basis at this time)," she affirmed.
Castro also highlighted that one of the groups supporting the complaint was previously scrutinized during an investigation into flood control anomalies. "Ang atin lamang pong nalalaman sa ngayon na ang party-list na nag-endorse ay isa sa walong contractors na nabanggit ng ICI (What we know for now is that the party-list that endorsed the complaint is one of the eight contractors mentioned by the Independent Commission for Infrastructure)," she explained.
Filed by lawyer Andre de Jesus and endorsed by Pusong Pinoy party-list Rep. Jett Nisay, the impeachment complaint accuses President Marcos of constitutional violations and betrayal of public trust, citing issues such as the arrest of former President Rodrigo Duterte on an International Criminal Court warrant and alleged corruption related to flood control projects. This marks the first impeachment attempt against Marcos since he took office in 2022.
