P4-B Allocated for State Universities to Expand Infrastructure and Enrollment

Manila: The 2026 national budget has allocated PHP4 billion to construct additional classrooms, enhance facilities, and offer more opportunities for deserving students across 114 state universities and colleges (SUCs) nationwide, as announced by Senator Sherwin Gatchalian.

According to Philippines News Agency, the chairperson of the Senate Committee on Finance stated that this allocation will enable SUCs to expand their enrollment capacity. Senator Gatchalian highlighted that limited capacity has been a significant barrier, forcing SUCs to turn away qualified students even when they meet admission requirements.

An analysis conducted by the senator's office revealed that 168,493 students were denied admission due to capacity constraints, despite being qualified for enrollment. Data from 62 SUCs showed that 32 institutions have exceeded their capacity, with 11 reaching full occupancy.

Senator Gatchalian emphasized that despite the availability of free college education, many young people remain unenrolled due to inadequate facilities and capacities in SUCs. He stressed the importance of ensuring that all students have the opportunity to continue their education. Under the substantial funding allocated for the education sector, all SUCs are assured of resources to increase their capacity to accept more students.
