Iloilo: Over 11,396 families, translating to 35,283 individuals, have proactively evacuated their homes in response to the Iloilo provincial government’s call to mitigate the anticipated impact of Typhoon Tino, internationally known as Kalmaegi.
According to Philippines News Agency, the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (PDRRM) officer, Cornelio Salinas, emphasized the region’s vulnerability to flooding, landslides, and storm surges. “Our target is zero casualties. All this is a shared responsibility, not just of the government,” Salinas stated in a phone interview.
The situation report indicates that the evacuated families are from 273 barangays across 23 local government units in the province. Of the evacuees, 1,884 families, or 5,630 individuals, are currently housed in 103 evacuation centers. Meanwhile, 1,251 families, equating to 3,462 individuals, have sought refuge with relatives or friends.
Typhoon Tino is projected to pass through Guimaras, entering Iloilo via its central and southern towns before exiting towards Antique. In preparation, the provincial social welfare and development office is set to collaborate with the Department of Social Welfare and Development to provide necessary assistance to around 1.2 million residents expected to be affected by the typhoon.
