Manila: Deputy Speaker and National Unity Party (NUP) chairman Ronaldo Puno has firmly rejected any move to impeach President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., stating that party leaders see no constitutional or factual grounds to support such a complaint. Puno addressed this issue during a media conference, emphasizing the party's clear stance against the impeachment bid.
According to Philippines News Agency, Puno revealed that the NUP has been discussing the issue internally, despite critics suggesting the possibility of an impeachment complaint. The conclusion reached by the party was that there was no basis for impeachment under the Constitution. The Antipolo City lawmaker expressed skepticism about any potential complaint, stating that he could not identify any constitutional grounds for filing an impeachment case against the President.
Puno elaborated on how the NUP members approached the matter, assessing it as they would any other impeachment complaint. He questioned the existence of any constitutional violations that could support such a case, stating that they found no evidence of any wrongdoing. Despite rejecting the impeachment attempt, Puno affirmed that the party remains committed to due process and existing legal standards.
In his statement, Puno conveyed his doubts about the credibility of any potential complaint, highlighting the necessity for clear constitutional grounds and adherence to legal scrutiny as dictated by the Supreme Court. For the NUP, the lack of credible allegations renders the impeachment issue insignificant, according to Puno.
