Manila: No more public school teachers will retire at the entry-level Teacher I position under a newly enacted career progression law, Senator Sherwin Gatchalian said. Gatchalian made the assurance as the Department of Education (DepEd) prepares to promote around 100,000 public school teachers and school heads this year.
According to Philippines News Agency, the senator stated that these promotions align with the implementation of Republic Act 12288, also known as the Career Progression System for Public School Teachers and School Leaders Act. The act expands career opportunities in teaching and school administration, ensuring that teachers no longer retire at the entry-level position.
The law establishes new teaching positions, including Teacher IV, Teacher V, Teacher VI, Teacher VII, Master Teacher V, Master Teacher VI, and School Principal V. These positions provide wider pathways for advancement within the public school system, allowing teachers to progress in their careers.
Gatchalian expressed that with more opportunities for career advancement, teachers can grow and succeed in their profession. He emphasized the importance of supporting teachers' welfare, highlighting their crucial role in educating the youth.
Furthermore, the law mandates DepEd to establish clear and transparent guidelines for the promotion of teachers and school leaders. Gatchalian, who is the principal sponsor and co-author of the measure, remarked that the institutionalization of a career progression system would ensure long-term professional growth for educators.
