Negros occidental: Negros Occidental Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson renewed his call for peace in the wake of the clash between government troops and New People's Army (NPA) remnants in the hinterlands of Binalbagan town.
According to Philippines News Agency, Lacson emphasized the ongoing conflict between government forces and rebel elements, urging the rebels to lay down their arms and allow the government to aid them towards achieving a peaceful existence. In his capacity as the chair of the Regional Peace and Order Council-Negros Island Region, Lacson expressed his hope for a lasting resolution to the insurgency affecting the province.
The clash occurred at approximately 2 a.m. when troops from the Philippine Army's 94th Infantry Battalion engaged with around five NPA remnants in Sitio Apitong, Barangay Bi-ao, resulting in the death of one rebel fighter. The deceased was initially identified as a resident of Barangay Buenavista in the neighboring Himamaylan City.
As a result of the encounter, village chief Junefel Aguillon announced the suspension of classes at all levels in six public schools and day care centers in the area starting Friday. Aguillon cited the panic and fear experienced by residents as the reason for the suspension, prioritizing the safety of learners and teachers until further notice.
The schools affected by the class suspension include Binadlan Elementary School, Bulwang Elementary School, Nasanagan Elementary School, Biao Elementary School, Biao National High School, and all barangay day care centers.
