Misamis oriental: The provincial government of Misamis Oriental, in collaboration with the Mines and Geosciences Bureau and various law enforcement agencies under Task Force Kalikasan, has successfully shut down illegal mining sites in the Municipality of Opol.
According to Philippines News Agency, Rogelio Labor, the task force's ground commander and a retired Army major, executed the cease-and-desist order and led a team comprising police, Army, and provincial officials. The operation targeted mining sites in Barangay Limonda, where authorities confiscated equipment and extracted ores from makeshift shanties operated by local miners.
Geran Flores, head of the Provincial Local Environment and Natural Resources Office, highlighted that although the area had been declared closed earlier this year, reports indicated that some operations resumed. "This is to properly document the present condition and ensure appropriate action and enforcement," Flores stated.
Governor Juliette Uy, since assuming office in 2025, has intensified efforts against illegal mining activities, urging for proper registration under the "Minahan ng Bayan" program.
