Manila: The Department of Transportation (DOTr) has been recognized by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) for its efforts to modernize fare collection through tap-to-pay and scan-to-pay technologies in the country's railway systems.

According to Philippines News Agency, the DOTr was named an Outstanding BSP Stakeholder for its automated fare collection system project during the 2026 BSP Stakeholders Appreciation Ceremony on August 10. This initiative involves the implementation of tap-to-pay technology using EMV (Europay, Mastercard, and Visa) credit and debit cards, along with near-field communication devices, and scan-to-pay QR technology across Metro Rail Transit Line 3 and Light Rail Transit Line 2.

Acting DOTr Secretary Giovanni Lopez emphasized that the project aims to provide Filipino commuters with enhanced convenience and efficiency. "Our mission is to give Filipino commuters the time, convenience, and comfort they deserve. As we expand cashless payment systems across our transport network, we are addressing long counter queues, easing passengers' daily travel, and delivering a modern transport system that ultimately puts our commuters' welfare first," Lopez stated.

DOTr Undersecretary for Railways Timothy John Batan expressed gratitude to the central bank and reiterated the department's commitment to sustaining the initiative. "We are honored to support BSP's vision for an interoperable, inclusive, and innovative digital payment system through the modernization of public transport fare collection. Together, we are building a more seamless commuting experience for every Filipino," Batan commented.

The DOTr highlighted that this recognition aligns with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.'s directive to launch digital payment systems across transport networks, further strengthening the commitment to enhancing the public transportation infrastructure in the Philippines.
