Legazpi: Lava effusion at Mayon Volcano is not indicative of an escalation in volcanic activity, as confirmed by the head of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) on Friday.
According to Philippines News Agency, Phivolcs shared a video on its social media page showing lava effusion and collapse along the Mi-isi and Bonga gullies recorded from 4:49 a.m. to 4:55 a.m. on Friday. Phivolcs Director Teresito Bacolcol clarified in an interview that these collapses are a natural result of unstable lava accumulation and do not necessarily signify a sudden rise in volcanic activity. He emphasized that the current situation represents ongoing effusive activity rather than stronger magmatic unrest.
Bacolcol highlighted that lava effusion and collapse might fill the gullies with volcanic materials. He warned that if lava and collapse materials are channeled into these gullies, it could result in repeated pyroclastic density currents (PDCs), rockfalls, and potential debris buildup that could travel further downslope.
Sustained lava effusion means continued lava buildup and repeated collapses, which could lead to frequent PDCs, rockfalls, and possible extension of lava flows. Bacolcol noted that the lava effusion at Mayon Volcano began on January 6, and the current activity is a continuation of what has been observed since then.
The volcano remains under Alert Level 3, prompting Bacolcol to remind the public to avoid the six-kilometer permanent danger zone. He stressed that PDCs can occur suddenly and travel quickly along gullies, posing life-threatening risks even without explosive eruptions. He urged preparedness and adherence to restrictions as crucial measures for public safety.
