Manila: The successful drilling and testing of the Camago-3 gas well is poised to significantly reduce the Philippines' reliance on imported fuel, thereby fortifying the nation's energy supply. This development is seen as a crucial step toward achieving energy security amidst ongoing global uncertainties.
According to Philippines News Agency, Senator Pia Cayetano, who chairs the Senate Energy panel, highlighted the importance of this advancement in light of the precarious global fuel supply influenced by geopolitical tensions, particularly in West Asia. She emphasized that the move towards enhancing local energy sources offers hope and opportunity during times when conflicts threaten to elevate energy costs globally. Such efforts are essential in shielding Filipino families from volatile and unpredictable energy expenses.
Cayetano further elaborated that boosting local gas production is essential to reducing import reliance and stabilizing electricity prices. She noted that domestically sourced gas is generally more affordable, and a steady local supply could lead to more reliable and potentially cheaper electricity for residential and commercial consumers. The senator also mentioned that the Camago-3 development is consistent with the goals of the Philippine Natural Gas Industry Development Act, which advocates for the use of indigenous energy sources to lessen import dependence.
The senator reiterated that reinforcing the domestic energy supply is vital for protecting the nation from fluctuating global fuel prices and ensuring long-term energy security. She stated that expanding local gas production aligns with broader objectives of sustainable growth, including the provision of affordable and clean energy.
President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. also commented on the achievement, stating that the successful drilling of the Camago-3 well is part of the government's strategy to secure affordable and reliable energy for the Filipino population. He mentioned that the well possesses a substantial amount of recoverable gas, which, alongside other developments, is expected to extend the life of the Malampaya gas field by approximately six years. Both the Camago-3 well and the Malampaya gas field are situated offshore in Palawan island province.
President Marcos pointed out that locally sourced gas is considerably cheaper than imported liquefied natural gas, resulting in cost savings for both households and businesses.
