Manila: President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. on Tuesday called upon newly promoted Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) flag officers to lead by example and maintain the highest standards of integrity as they assume greater responsibilities in safeguarding the nation's maritime interests.
According to Philippines News Agency, the President administered the oath of office to 21 newly promoted PCG flag officers, which included one vice admiral, two rear admirals, and 18 commodores, during a ceremony held in Malaca±ang. Among the officers sworn in were Vice Admiral Rommel Supangan, Rear Admiral Jay Tarriela, the PCG spokesperson for the West Philippine Sea, and Commodore Noemie Cayabyab, the PCG spokesperson.
Marcos emphasized the significant impact of their roles, stating, "This right that you carry is a responsibility that impacts every Filipino, especially those who depend on the sea, and in the Philippines that counts every single Filipino." He highlighted the strategic importance of the PCG in a country comprised of thousands of islands, where maritime activities are intrinsically linked to food, trade, security, and national identity.
The President commended the PCG's ongoing patrols in the West Philippine Sea, its support for resupply missions and Filipino fisherfolk, and its efforts in maritime safety, port security, environmental protection, and enforcement against illegal fishing and smuggling. He connected the officers' new roles to the essence of National Heroes Day, emphasizing that courage is cultivated through training, discipline, preparation, and readiness to serve.
"This is the courage that we see in men and women on the Philippine coastline. This is the standard that I ask you to carry into your command," Marcos stated. He acknowledged the personal risks PCG personnel face during search and rescue operations, responding to distress calls, and assisting communities during natural disasters.
Marcos urged the flag officers to prepare future Coast Guard leaders, embrace modernization and innovation, and strengthen partnerships with other institutions. "Lead by example. Uphold the highest standards of integrity," Marcos said. "Serve in a way that honors the oath that you took today. Lead with courage and integrity. Always remember whom you serve," he added.
First Lady Liza Marcos, who holds the honorary rank of Auxiliary Vice Admiral in the PCG's Auxiliary unit, was present at the ceremony, supporting the President in his call to service.
