Manila Archdiocese Encourages Peaceful Protests Against Corruption in Flood Control Projects

Manila: The Archdiocese of Manila has called upon its members to express their dissatisfaction with corruption in flood control projects through peaceful means. Manila Archbishop Jose Cardinal Advincula emphasized the citizens’ right to protest against governmental irregularities, highlighting the importance of such actions as expressions of moral conviction and civic duty.

According to Philippines News Agency, Cardinal Advincula stressed that organized rallies denouncing corruption are not merely political acts but reflect the people’s collective moral stance against corruption. “The public’s engagement in governance extends beyond election periods,” he stated, adding that citizens should hold leaders accountable through vigilance and, when necessary, protests.

The archbishop also mentioned the Church’s role in guiding and inspiring the faithful, urging for impartiality and objectivity in addressing political issues. He expressed hope that politics could still serve the common good, despite its challenges.

On Monday, religious leaders and civil society groups called for public participation in a protest against alleged anomalies in flood control projects. The event, known as the Trillion Peso March Against Corruption, is scheduled for September 21 at the People Power Monument in Quezon City. TPM spokesperson Francis Aquino Dee estimated that 15,000 participants would attend, with numbers expected to rise as the event approaches.

Fr. Albert Delvo, co-convenor of the Manila Archdiocesan and Parochial Schools Association, clarified that the protest is not aligned with any political figure but is a stand against corruption. Delvo also expressed gratitude to President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. for his efforts in tackling corruption in flood control projects.
