Albuera: The chief of the municipal police station and several police personnel in Albuera, Leyte, have been relieved of their posts following an incident at the town's border checkpoint, where armed civilians were reportedly allowed to assist in manning the operation.

According to Philippines News Agency, the Leyte Police Provincial Office (LPPO) announced that an investigation is underway to determine how armed civilians became involved in checkpoint operations. "The LPPO will conduct a thorough investigation to establish the identities, authority, and circumstances surrounding the presence of the individuals seen carrying firearms. Any violation established by the investigation will be dealt with in accordance with existing laws, rules, and regulations," LPPO Director Col. Celerino Sacro Jr. stated.

The LPPO's action was prompted by a viral video on social media, which showed several men, not in police uniform, flagging down and inspecting passing vehicles, appearing to perform duties usually carried out by law enforcement personnel. Uniformed police officers were also present at the checkpoint.

According to the Philippine National Police, non-uniformed personnel are not permitted to man or exercise authority at checkpoints, particularly when they are civilians. Only authorized law enforcement personnel should be involved in stopping and inspecting vehicles at police checkpoints.

Authorities are also investigating reports that the civilians were involved in opening vehicle doors to inspect the interiors of passing vehicles, a practice reportedly prohibited under checkpoint procedures. Investigators are working to determine who authorized or instructed them to help man the checkpoint.

"LPPO assures the public that the matter is being handled with impartiality and due process. Moreover, we remain committed to professionalism, accountability, and public safety in all police operations," Sacro added.

The checkpoint is located in Barangay Benolho in Albuera town, near the boundary of Ormoc City.
