La Salle Secures No. 4 Spot in UAAP Men’s Badminton Semifinals Race

Manila: De La Salle University triumphed over University of Santo Tomas (UST) with a 4-1 victory on Saturday, creating a three-way tie for the final semifinal berth in the UAAP Season 88 men’s badminton tournament. The matches took place at the Rizal Memorial Badminton Hall in Malate, Manila.

According to Philippines News Agency, La Salle, UST, and Adamson University all share identical 1-4 win-loss records. However, the Green Shuttlers claimed the No. 4 spot and earned a first-round playoff bye by virtue of matches won. UST and Adamson are set to clash on Sunday at 8 a.m., with the victor facing La Salle on Monday at the same time to determine the last semifinal slot.

In another thrilling encounter, Ateneo de Manila University, in the battle of undefeated teams, delivered a stunning 4-1 upset against defending champions National University, maintaining their top spot with a perfect 5-0 record. Meanwhile, the University of the Philippines secured the No. 3 spot with a decisive 5-0 victory over Adamson.

La Salle’s success was highlighted by rookie Lovic Javier’s commanding win over JM Sison, 21-6, 21-10. The duo of Joshua Morada and Yuan Tan overcame Ron Galve and Bien Miraflor in a three-set match, while Miguel Cuarte and Zaki Layno outplayed their opponents John Vincent Espinoza and Janzen Panisales. James Capin also contributed to the victory with a win over Angelo Tuazon. UST’s sole triumph came from Lennox Cuilao, who managed to defeat Cuarte in a tightly contested match.

La Salle’s coach Owen Lopez praised his team’s performance, noting his strategy of sending motivational messages rather than scolding them, emphasizing the importance of handling pressure as athletes.

In other matches, the University of the Philippines showed their strength with Shan Clar, Jelo Albo, Arjay Lazareto, and others winning their respective games, marking a clean sweep over Adamson.

Ateneo’s victory was spearheaded by rookie JR Pandi, who outperformed reigning Most Valuable Player Lanz Zafra, while Lyrden Laborte and Robby Ramos secured crucial wins to seal their triumph against National University.
