Yawata: Shoko Kawata, who is believed to be the first sitting female local government chief in Japan to take maternity leave, has given birth to her first child, a baby girl. The city government announced on Wednesday that both Kawata and her newborn are healthy.

According to Philippines News Agency, Kawata, the 36-year-old mayor of Yawata in Kyoto Prefecture, shared her gratitude through the city office. She expressed sincere appreciation for the support she received from those who offered words of encouragement, her colleagues covering her duties, and everyone involved.

Kawata, recognized as Japan's youngest female mayor, has been on maternity leave since July. She has expressed plans to resume her official duties in early November.
