Iloilo: The provincial government of Iloilo, through the Office of the Provincial Veterinarian (OPV), is aiming to vaccinate approximately 270,000 dogs this year, accounting for 70 percent of its canine population. Provincial Veterinarian Dr. Darel Tabuada stated that the goal is to complete the vaccination by April 30, contingent upon the delivery of the second batch of vaccines procured by the provincial government.
According to Philippines News Agency, the province has allocated PHP9 million for rabies vaccine procurement. Municipalities are also contributing to the effort, as the OPV aims to exceed the 70 percent vaccination coverage target. As of Friday, the OPV has achieved 20 percent of its target. In addition to the vaccination campaign, the OPV is conducting spaying and neutering operations to control the dog and cat population.
The vaccination drive has reportedly led to a decline in rabies cases in the province since its commencement in 2023. This year, there have been eight reported animal rabies cases. In comparison, the province recorded 91 and 97 cases in 2021 and 2022, respectively. Dr. Tabuada acknowledged that stray dogs, which make up 30 percent of the total dog population, present a particular challenge due to their vulnerability to rabies. Local government units are being encouraged to implement impounding and pet control programs for stray dogs, in line with the Animal Welfare Act.
Furthermore, 38 island villages in the province have been recognized as rabies-free by the Department of Agriculture and the Department of Health. These islands are primarily located in the municipalities of Concepcion, Carles, San Dionisio, and Ajuy. Efforts are underway to achieve rabies-free status for three island barangays in Estancia by September.
In a related development, the Iloilo City Government, through the City Health Office and the City Veterinarian, organized its first-ever Rabies Summit on Friday as part of Rabies Awareness Month. Nearly 200 pets received free rabies vaccinations, and attendees participated in lectures on responsible pet ownership, first aid, and strengthening local animal welfare programs.
