Iloilo: The provincial government and 43 local government units (LGUs) in Iloilo have signed a memorandum of agreement to facilitate the launch of the Benteng Bigas Meron (BBM) Na!, a program aimed at providing rice at PHP20 per kilogram to local beneficiaries.
According to Philippines News Agency, the program is part of the SiPag at TiyaGa for MoRProGRes sa Bagong Pilipinas, a comprehensive initiative designed to boost the agriculture sector while tackling malnutrition within the province. Governor Arthur Defensor Jr. and Badiangan Mayor Suzette Mamon, who is also the president of the League of Municipalities of the Philippines – Iloilo chapter, were the main signatories of the agreement.
The Provincial Agriculturist Office revealed that the provincial government has procured 20,000 bags of rice from Food Terminal, Inc., with each bag weighing 50 kg. An amount of PHP26.5 million has been allocated for this purchase. Mayor Mamon stated that the rice would be sold at the subsidized rate of PHP20 per kg, with each beneficiary eligible to purchase up to 30 kg.
Mamon expressed her support for the program, noting its potential impact on nutritionally compromised children and families. She mentioned plans to collaborate with the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) and the Iloilo Provincial Health Office to identify eligible families.
Dr. Wendel Marcelo, Provincial Health Officer 1, emphasized the program’s focus on addressing the nutritional needs of the province’s vulnerable population. The initiative aims to provide subsidized rice, particularly for undernourished children under five years old. Following a thorough validation process, 7,738 beneficiaries have been identified to receive this assistance.
