Quezon city: The Department of National Defense (DND) on Thursday extended its condolences to the family and loved ones of Chief Presidential Legal Counsel Juan Ponce Enrile, who passed away at the age of 101. “Enrile is an icon in defense policy and strategy, and played a foundational role in building the modern DND,” the department said in a statement.
According to Philippines News Agency, one of the country’s most enduring and influential political figures, Enrile first rose to prominence in the 1960s, eventually serving as Minister of National Defense under then-President Ferdinand Marcos Sr. term. Prior to becoming chief presidential legal counsel, Enrile served as senator, even becoming Senate president from 2008 to 2013.
“His long and storied career in public service marked profound changes in our nation’s history,” the DND said. “His legacy in our country’s politics and governance will always be remembered.” The Philippine flag in front of the DND headquarters in Camp Aguinaldo, Quezon City will be flown at half mast to honor Enrile’s memory, the DND added.
Enrile was reportedly under intensive care since earlier this week due to pneumonia.
